The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on societies will be shaped, in part, by the demographic make-up of various societies. The age structure of societies is likely to be closely associated with the fatality rate among those who contract the disease. At the same time, the pandemic may shape the demographic future of the societies where it has taken root.

The serious economic consequences associated with the pandemic and its aftermath may well depress birth rates. It may well influence migration flows around the world as travel becomes more difficult and societies close in on themselves. While it is too early to understand the full effects of the pandemic, attention to the demographic consequences will be important for policymakers around the world.
