Sporadic food shortages and supply disruptions that Canadians experienced in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic could be worsened without substantial government support to the agriculture sector, a foundational part of the Canadian economy. Beef and pork farmers have suffered major losses due to virus-related shutdowns in meat-processing facilities. Growers have seen their crops go to waste as commercial buyers were shuttered.

The federal government can help avoid serious disruptions to Canada’s food security if it considers additional strategies. Canada’s recovery from this pandemic will rely heavily on a stable agricultural sector, but without swift government action, Canada’s food security is far from assured.
