Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) Scholarship Fund

The University of Calgary’s Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) is an interdisciplinary graduate program providing a balanced education related to energy and environmental management. A combined offering through the School of Public Policy, Haskayne School of Business, Schulich School of Engineering, School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape, and the Faculty of Law, SEDV is an unprecedented program designed for professionals and students who are seeking a broad-based and comprehensive education in sustainable energy.

After graduating with a Bachelor in Management and working in the financial services industry, I was eager to transition into the energy industry and explore sustainability. The MSc in Sustainable Energy Development provided exactly what I was hoping for – a holistic education on sustainable development in the context of today’s society.

The program offered a balance of technical and non-technical courses and taught us to evaluate the economic, environmental, and social impacts of resource development. Through experiential learning opportunities, as well as the Capstone project, the program enabled me to transition to a unique role in the energy industry that combines my finance background with the skills and knowledge I gained through the SEDV program”

The Distinguished Policy Fellowship is the highest honour given by The School of Public Policy. Since its inception in 2017, proceeds from the Distinguished Policy Fellow awards dinner have funded numerous scholarships to deserving graduate students.

Hear from one of our students the transformative gift that a scholarship can be:

Donors transform lives.  Five years ago, I made the decision to begin my undergraduate degree.  At the time, I was a newly single mother of four children, aged 7, 10, 13, and 15, living in a small town south of Calgary, and received little to no child support.  My decision to acquire a post-secondary education was multi-faceted: I wanted to be inspired, I wanted to inspire my children, and I wanted to learn… but most of all, I wanted a way up and out of where I found myself.  In my opinion, education is the vehicle required to make that move.  While I depended heavily on student loans to get through both a BA, as well as an MA, neither would have been possible without the generosity of donors.  Because of their gifts, I was able to focus on my education as if my life depended on it (to me, it did), rather than on putting food on the table, or keeping a roof over our heads.  Because of donors, I graduated Summa Cum Laude, and was accepted into the Master of Public Policy program at the University of Calgary, which I recently completed.  I will be grateful for the rest of my life for the people who gave me the means to change everything.  My win is your win.  Thank you.
